Minimum Age of Swimmers for Competition

The ASA Board has agreed to an amendment of ASA Law 411.5 to read:

411.5 Racing

For each category the age specified shall be the age of the swimmer at midnight on the day of the event or the final day of a series of events forming part of one competition whichever is later.

411.5.1 Events restricted to members of one club. No minimum age
411.5.2 Inter-club events limited to not more than eight clubs which do not form part of a series of events as in a league. 8 years
411.5.3 Open events, other than in Regional and National Competitions. 9 years
411.5.4 Relay events in Regional Competitions. 9 years
411.5.5 Individual events in Regional Competitions. 10 years
411.5.6 Relay events in National Competitions. 10 years
411.5.7 Individual events in National Competitions. 11 years

The age of a swimmer at midnight on 31st December in the year of competition is no longer used in the determination of a swimmer’s age with reference to the minimum ages of competition for any swimming competition.

ASA Board has agreed that this change should be introduced with immediate effect. However, it is accepted that Clubs, Leagues and Competition organisers need adequate opportunity to amend their conditions to ensure compliance and therefore implementation will take place from 1st September 2007. Until that date there are no exemptions to the existing rules printed in the 2006 handbook.

‘A series of events forming part of one competition’ does not allow competitions to be linked. The two, three or fourrounds of a team competition are minimum ages as per the date of the last round. However if the results lead onto another competition, then this is NOT part of one competition and the minimumdate of the second competition cannot be used for the first competition.
