We expect all parents to assist in some way in the running of the Club; it can be fun for you as well!
Poolside
As you can now appreciate, all these activities take a lot of time to organise and many people to assist. All our poolside personel do their task because they enjoy it and only the Chief Coach and Assistant Chief Coach receive any form of regular financial reward, other than out of pocket expenses.
The ASA is presently in the process of changing the overall structure of teaching and coaching qualifications, so our current practices will no doubt be radically altered. In the past we have regularly run courses to ensure all of our poolside helpers are competent to teach and coach.
The Coaches have various levels of qualification depending upon their years of involvement and the time which they have been able to commit. Most of our Teachers and Coaches become interested in swimming through their own children's involvement.
Unlike other sports, you do not really have to swim well to teach others. In fact, some of the best teachers are those adults who learnt to swim late in life as they appreciate the problems faced by the non-swimmers. Of course, all our teachers have to complete the basic lifesaving requirements of the ASA courses, but these are not usually too arduous, as the basic premise of all lifesaving is to only enter the water as a last resort. However, we do need people to act as lifeguards at all our training sessions, so, if you have an NPLQ or equivalent qualification, or would like to see if you could get one, please contact the Club Secretary.
Child Protection
ASA Ruling - All helpers who take on any job need to complete a child protection form.
The general principle is that every adult in your club who has personal contact in any capacity with under 18 year olds should complete a form. This will include people such as club coaches, teachers, poolside helpers, team managers and chaperones, but could extend on a wider basis if other members of the club perform a duty on behalf of the club which allows personal access previously described.
