  1. Bracknell Swimming Club expects that all swimming members who decide to dive into shallow water (less than 1.8 metres deep) are capable of consistently executing an efficient 'racing dive'.
  2. You must understand that diving into swimming pools can be dangerous, but it is perfectly safe if due regard is given to the special precautions needed when entering shallow water. Therefore, proper attention must be given by BWSC members at all times to the points as follows:
  3. ASA Law recognises that a swimmer may elect to start from the blocks, from the side of the pool or in the water.
  4. Swimmers diving into shallow water (less than 1.8 metres) must take care always to use a flat racing dive.
  5. Jumping into shallow water can also be dangerous. When entering shallow water for the start of a backstroke race, lower yourselves into the water, do not jump.
  6. Never jump or dive into water which is less than 0.9 metres deep.
  7. Swimmers are more at risk from 'careless diving' at their first few galas than at any later galas where they will be more experienced and more relaxed.
'TAKE CARE' OF SWIMMERS AT THEIR FIRST GALAS
  8. Swimmers may be more at risk of diving accidents during warm-up times than at any other time.
TAKE CARE DURING WARM-UP SESSIONS - USE FLAT DIVES
    AVOID OTHER SWIMMERS
  9. Swimmers, particularly older swimmers, must avoid 'toppling head downwards' from starting blocks, e.g. if trying to restrain a false start.
NOTE: An ASA Official should not be more, or less, inclined to disqualify a swimmer for 'delaying the start' just because a swimmer flattens his/her entry into the water on a false start.
  10. Always obey Pool Management and BWSC Representatives' instructions concerning safety (e.g. do not run on poolside, no diving if told not to, etc., etc.)

DO NOT TAKE DIVING RISKS LIGHTLY - TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN NECK - IF IN DOUBT DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR ADVICE

The depths of the shallow ends of the pools regularly used by Bracknell Swimming Club are as follows:-

  • Arborfield 1.25m
  • Harmanswater 0.90m
